About this map

What it shows

Every case of bird flu that Biosecurity New Zealand or the Department of Conservation has publicly confirmed. There are 2 of them, both in wild birds. The most recent was confirmed on 17 July 2026.

The map shows the approximate location of each case, usually the town the official release named.

What it does not show

• An unmarked area means nothing has been officially recorded there. It does not mean the area is safe.
• Biosecurity New Zealand usually names the town a case is near rather than an exact spot, so the places marked are approximate. Each case says so when you tap it.
• Colours follow what has been officially announced. They are not on a timer, so a case stays marked until the official position changes.

Where the data comes from

Cases are copied by hand from published Biosecurity New Zealand and Department of Conservation releases. Every case links to the release it came from, so you can check it yourself. We were not given this data, and there is no automatic feed.

To report a sick or dead bird, ring Biosecurity New Zealand on 0800 80 99 66. Do not email us about it. Bird flu has to be reported to Biosecurity New Zealand, and we are not able to act on it.
