If you only look at the map

We hold nothing about you. Nothing on the map asks for your name, email address or phone number, and there is nothing to sign in to.

If you sign up for alerts

This is the whole list of what we keep:

• Your email address, so we can send the alerts.
• The places you asked about: a name you choose, a point on the map and how far around it to tell you. Each point is rounded to about a kilometre before it is saved, so we never hold exactly where you are.
• Which cases we have already told you about, so we don't tell you twice.
• The codes we email you, stored scrambled so they cannot be read back, and only until they are used or run out.

We do not keep your IP address, we never store a password because there isn't one, and we don't keep a record of what you type in the address box.

Being signed in puts one thing in your browser: a code that says you entered a valid one-time code. It lasts an hour and closing the browser ends it.

Every alert has a one-click link to stop them, and there is a Remove my information button on the alerts page. Either one deletes everything above. We keep no copy.

What is kept in your browser

Your browser saves a random code, so we can tell a repeat visit from a new one. With it we can see roughly which town or city you are in, and what kind of phone or computer you used. Clearing your browsing data removes the code.

If you sign in to manage alerts there is a second one, described above. It only says you entered a valid code, it lasts an hour, and closing the browser ends it.

The map does not remember where you left it. Every visit opens on the whole country.

Location

The map only asks where you are if you tap "use my location". The coordinates move the map and nothing else. They stay on your device and are never sent to us.

Analytics

We record usage events, so we can tell what is worth improving. Your email address and the places you save are never part of it.

Services we use

We don't sell or share anything. These are the only outside services involved:

• Cloudflare — runs the site and keeps it online. Every visit goes through them, and like any website host they keep a basic record of it.
• Mixpanel — the analytics above. Stored in the EU, as New Zealand isn't an available region.
• Resend — sends the alert emails. They see your email address because they have to deliver to it. Only used if you sign up for alerts.
• Land Information New Zealand — publishes the address list the address box searches. We hold our own copy, so what you type is never sent to them or to anyone else.
